Why a Hardwired Dash Cam Is Different
Most dash cams sold online come with a cable you drape across the dash and plug into the lighter socket. It works, in the sense that it records — until the day the plug wiggles loose, or the camera switched off with the ignition and missed the one thing you needed it for. A proper install runs the power up the A-pillar, along the headliner and down to the fuse box, so there is nothing to see, nothing to snag and nothing to come unplugged. The camera comes on with the car, every time, and with a hardwiring kit it can keep watching after you have walked away.
That last part is what people are usually paying for without realising it. Parking mode is the difference between a dash cam and a witness: a hardwired Thinkware or Garmin sits in a low-power state while the vehicle is off, and when it senses an impact or movement it wakes and saves the clip. Someone reverses into you in a lot at Park Royal and drives off — you have the plate. Done through the lighter socket, that footage simply does not exist.
Backup Cameras That Work With What You Have
A backup camera does not have to mean a new stereo. On many vehicles we can add a camera and bring the picture up on the factory screen using a vehicle-specific interface, so the dash stays exactly as it was and the image appears the moment you select reverse. Where the factory screen cannot take a video input, we pair the camera with a compact mirror monitor or, if you were already thinking about it, an aftermarket touchscreen that adds CarPlay and Android Auto at the same time.
The camera itself ranges from a universal unit like the Crimestopper CAM-400 — a small, discreet camera that mounts cleanly on almost any vehicle — to vehicle-specific cameras that replace a licence-plate light or sit in the tailgate handle, so the car looks exactly as it did from the factory. Parking Sensors and Blind-Spot Alerts
Sensors go in where the factory would have put them — flush in the bumper, colour-matched, wired to a discreet buzzer or a display — so the vehicle looks like it came that way. Blind-spot systems add radar modules behind the rear bumper and small indicators in the mirrors or A-pillars. Both are the sort of thing that seems like a luxury until the first time it saves a bumper, and both are far more common as retrofits than people expect: a lot of vehicles left the factory without them only because of the trim level someone chose years ago.

Will parking mode drain my battery?
Not when it is installed with a proper hardwiring kit. The kit monitors your battery voltage and cuts power to the camera before it drops low enough to affect starting, and we set that threshold for your vehicle. On a healthy battery a modern camera in parking mode draws very little. If your battery is already tired, parking mode will show it up sooner — that is worth knowing before we start rather than after.
Can I add a backup camera to my factory screen?
On a great many vehicles, yes. We use a vehicle-specific interface that lets the factory display accept a camera input, so reverse triggers the picture on the screen you already have. Whether your exact year and model can do this depends on the head unit it shipped with — tell us what you drive and we will check before we quote. Where it is not possible, a mirror monitor or a new touchscreen are the alternatives.
How long does a dash cam install take?
A front camera, hardwired with parking mode, is usually a couple of hours. Front and rear together, or a camera plus a backup camera on the factory screen, is a half day. Parking sensors and blind-spot systems take longer because the bumper comes off. We give you a firm time when we book you in.
Do you fit fleet vehicles and work trucks?
Yes, and it is a good use of a dash cam. For a fleet the value is consistency: the same camera, installed the same way in every vehicle, with parking mode and, where wanted, cloud upload so footage is available without pulling the card.
