A boat is the harshest place you can put a speaker. Salt air corrodes contacts, UV bleaches cones and cracks surrounds, spray finds its way into anything not sealed, and the whole thing lives outdoors with no roof, no doors and no cabin to reinforce the sound. Car speakers bolted into a deck sound thin on day one and are usually dead within a season or two. Marine-grade equipment is built for exactly this: sealed drivers, stainless hardware, UV-stable materials, conformal-coated amplifier boards, and tinned wiring that will not green up the first winter. It costs more because it lasts, and because it has to work loud in open air with nothing to help it.

A runabout that gets used for a day on Indian Arm wants clean sound at the helm and enough volume to hear over the outboard. A wakeboard boat wants tower speakers pointed back at the rider, loud enough to carry across water and a wake, with the bow zone turned down for whoever is not riding. A cruiser wants the cabin, the cockpit and the flybridge each on their own volume, controlled from wherever you happen to be. Those are three completely different systems, and the design work — where the speakers go, how many zones, how much amplifier power, where the source unit lives so it can be seen in sunlight and reached from the wheel — is most of what you are paying for. Getting it right means the system feels like part of the boat rather than something added.
The wiring is where a marine install quietly succeeds or fails. Everything we run is tinned marine cable, terminated with heat-shrink connectors, fused correctly at the battery and routed away from bilge water and heat. Amplifiers go somewhere dry and ventilated. Speaker cutouts are sealed. It is not glamorous work and none of it is visible when the job is done — but it is the difference between a system that plays every summer for a decade and one that starts cutting out the second August.
Almost certainly. Runabouts, bowriders, wake boats, sailboats, cruisers, pontoons, fishing boats — the principles are the same and the details are what we work out with you. The main practical question is access: whether we can get the boat to us, or in some cases come to it. Tell us what you have and where it is.
Yes. Tower speakers are a specialised part of marine audio — they need to throw sound backward across the water to a rider fifty or more feet behind the boat, which takes real power and the right drivers. We fit them with their own amplifier channel and their own zone so you can run them hard without deafening the people in the bow.
Usually, yes. Modern marine source units talk to chartplotters and multifunction displays over NMEA 2000, so you can often control the stereo from the screen you already have at the helm. If your boat has a Garmin, Simrad, Raymarine or similar display, tell us the model and we will spec a source unit that integrates with it.
A source unit and a pair of speakers on a small boat is a day. A multi-zone system with a subwoofer, amplifiers and tower speakers on a wake boat is several. Boats take longer than cars because there is nowhere convenient to run wire and every hole has to be sealed — we would rather take the time than have you back with a fault. We give you a firm estimate when we see the boat.
Off-season. Everyone thinks about the boat stereo in May, which is exactly when the calendar fills. If you can bring the boat in through the autumn or winter, you get more of our time, the work is done properly without a queue behind it, and the system is ready and tested for the first warm weekend rather than the third.
