This 2022 BMW M4 came to us from Vancouver with half the job already done. The owner had an Escort Redline 360c mounted up at the windscreen and was happy with it β but a detector only tells you what it hears, and what it hears is radar. Laser was the gap he wanted closed.
Radar and laser are different problems
A radar gun floods a wide cone with radio energy, and it spills off signs, guardrails and other traffic long before it settles on you. That is why a good detector earns its keep: there is usually warning to be had. Laser doesn't work that way. A lidar unit puts a narrow beam on a single vehicle, takes its reading in a fraction of a second, and is finished. By the time a detector announces the hit, the number already exists.
Countering laser therefore means answering it rather than just hearing it. A laser shifter watches for the incoming pulses and returns a signal of its own, which is a different piece of hardware doing a different job β which is why the two live together in a car rather than one replacing the other.

What went in
We fitted Escort's Laser ShifterMax heads. On this kind of car the hardware is the easy part; the mounting is the job. Shifter heads only work if they have a clean, square view of the road, low and unobstructed, and this M4's nose is carbon lip, brake ducting and driver-assistance sensors almost all the way across. There is no template for it. Each position gets worked out on the car, checked for what shadows it, and then finished so that the car still looks standard from three feet away.

How it turned out
The owner leaves with the two halves working together: the Redline 360c doing what a good detector does, and the ShifterMax heads covering the case a detector was never built for β set into the front end rather than hung off it.
