Uniden R9W — flagship radar and laser detection

The owner of this SL 63 Roadster wanted Uniden's flagship radar and laser system fitted. He also wanted it hidden: no suction cups on the windscreen or cable running down the A-pillar.

A windscreen-mounted detector can be stolen or knocked off, and the mount doesn't always put the sensors in the right place. It also leaves a black box in view. A hidden install suited this car.

The grille does the work

The R9W is a two-part system: the receiving hardware goes where it can see, and the display goes where you can. On this car the sensors went into the Panamericana grille.

Front end after the install. The sensor modules sit between the vertical slats, finished to disappear against the black grille — you have to know they are there to find them.

The AMG's deep, black, vertical-slat grille gave us room to hide the hardware. The modules blend in with the grille from a normal viewing distance. Nothing sticks out from the bodywork to catch in a car wash or invite someone to pull at it.

A grille mount is a permanent install. We measure, fit and wire it once, so it needs to be right from the start.

Where the display went

The Uniden R9W display mounted flush against the windscreen header beside the rear-view mirror, showing speed in km/h
The display tucked up against the header rail beside the mirror — in the driver's eyeline when it matters, out of the way when it doesn't. No cable visible anywhere in the cabin.

The display sits high and tight against the windscreen header, next to the mirror. You can read it at a glance without looking down, and it doesn't block the middle of the windscreen. All the wiring runs behind the trim.

Why it was worth doing this way

The hardwired system powers up with the car, with the sensors held in the positions we set during the install. There's nothing to plug in, reposition or take off the glass when the owner parks downtown.

The car still looks factory, just as the owner asked.
