VW radio gone black? Stuck on the Volkswagen logo? No sound, a frozen touchscreen or a system that keeps restarting? These symptoms can interrupt far more than your music. Depending on your VW, the factory screen also displays your backup camera, parking information and vehicle settings.

Volkswagen has documented infotainment faults across several systems and model years. Finding the cause matters—but when your factory head unit needs replacing, you have an opportunity to improve what you use every day.

Performance Car Stereo in North Vancouver offers VW radio replacement and integration for all Volkswagen models. We build your replacement around a Kenwood or Sony head unit with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with the interfaces needed to keep your factory steering-wheel controls, backup camera, parking sensors and other supported functions working together. We confirm the retention details for your exact vehicle before quoting.

Why is my VW radio not working?

The symptom is the starting point. A dark screen, an unresponsive touchscreen and a radio with no sound can have different causes. The factory system, its software and the vehicle’s electrical connections all matter when deciding what to do next.

VW radio black screen or completely dead

Tell us whether the screen is blank while audio still plays, or whether the entire system appears off. Note whether the buttons illuminate and whether the reversing camera still appears. That helps distinguish a display complaint from a loss of power or a wider infotainment problem. A black screen alone does not prove the head unit has failed permanently.

VW radio stuck on the logo or constantly restarting

A system that repeatedly returns to the VW welcome screen is not completing normal startup. Record whether it restarts immediately, after a few minutes or only occasionally. VW has documented restarting and freezing complaints; the next step depends on the fitted system and its software version.

VW touchscreen not responding

If the image looks normal but taps do nothing, describe whether the whole screen is affected or only certain areas. Also note whether the physical buttons and steering-wheel controls still work. This is useful information for assessing the system and planning a replacement.

VW radio turns on but has no sound

Let us know whether the silence affects radio, Bluetooth, calls and every other source, or only one function. Include any factory premium audio system, such as Fender or Dynaudio. The amplifier and audio connections need to be considered alongside the head unit.

Known Volkswagen radio problems: what VW’s records show

These complaints are documented in Volkswagen’s own technical information. Two examples show why it is worth identifying your system rather than assuming every VW radio has the same fault.

MIB2: black screen, freezing, restarting and loss of audio

Volkswagen bulletin 91-19-03, issued October 23, 2019, addresses MIB2 Composition and Discover Media complaints including blank displays, freezes, reboots, missing audio and volume-control problems. It lists selected 2018–2019 Atlas, Golf, Golf R, GTI, Golf SportWagen and Tiguan LWB, plus 2019 Arteon and Jetta, with equipment code I8F.

The bulletin specifies a software update for eligible software versions. It establishes a documented issue, not a diagnosis for every car with these symptoms. Read Volkswagen’s MIB2 technical bulletin, hosted by NHTSA.

RNS 510: freezing, restarting and unexpected shutdowns

Volkswagen’s December 10, 2014 on-car analysis list records RNS 510 complaints involving freezing, restarts and random shutdowns in 2014–2015 Passat vehicles. This is a separate record involving an older navigation system, not the MIB2 bulletin above. Read Volkswagen’s on-car analysis record.

These US-market records describe specific systems and applications; they do not provide a fleet-wide failure rate. For your Canadian-market VW, the installed hardware and software determine which information applies. If an applicable software update resolves the problem, replacement may not be necessary. If the unit has failed—or you want modern phone connectivity—we can plan the upgrade around your car.

Our solution: a VW head unit replacement with factory integration

A replacement should feel like it belongs in your Volkswagen. The screen is only one part of the job: the fitting kit, wiring, vehicle interface, camera connection and setup determine how the finished system works.

We offer integration across all VW models, including Golf, GTI, Golf R, Jetta, Passat, Tiguan, Atlas, Arteon, Beetle, CC and Touareg. Each quote is built for the individual car’s year, trim and original equipment. Bring us your model even if it is not listed here.

Keep your factory steering-wheel controls

We match the steering-control interface to your VW and chosen Kenwood or Sony receiver, so supported volume, track and phone controls remain part of the driving experience. The exact button functions are confirmed during installation planning.

Keep your factory backup camera

Your original reversing camera needs the right connection to the new head unit. We identify the camera system and specify the appropriate retention hardware, including any changes to guideline behaviour. Camera compatibility is confirmed as part of your package.

Keep parking sensors and vehicle functions integrated

Parking-sensor audio, on-screen parking graphics and vehicle settings can depend on the factory radio. We account for these functions when choosing the interface, along with any factory amplifier and other equipment that communicates through the system.

For example, Connects2’s MIB II interface documentation describes retention of steering controls, vehicle menus and parking-sensor functions, with separate provisions for camera and emergency-call integration. That illustrates why the correct interface matters; your installation uses the hardware appropriate to your VW.

You receive a clear plan for what stays, which adapters are included and any functions that change. Coverage across VW models does not mean every model uses the same parts or offers identical feature retention.

Upgrade to wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

Replacing a failed radio can also make your VW easier to live with. We recommend suitable Kenwood and Sony receivers with wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto, selected around your dashboard, phone and factory integration requirements.

  • Navigation on the new screen: use compatible apps such as Apple Maps, Google Maps or Waze through your phone.
  • Your music and podcasts: access supported listening apps through CarPlay or Android Auto.
  • Calls and voice control: use supported hands-free and voice-assistant functions.
  • Wireless connection: connect a compatible phone without plugging it in for each journey after setup.
  • Audio adjustment: choose a receiver with the sound controls and expansion options that suit your system.

Wireless phone projection is available on selected models from both brands; examples are documented by Kenwood and Sony. Your quote specifies the actual receiver and its features. Wireless connection does not charge your phone, and phone compatibility still applies.

How much does a VW radio replacement cost?

The useful price is the cost of a complete, working installation. A receiver-only price leaves out the parts and labour needed to integrate it with your Volkswagen.

Your PCS quote accounts for:

  • The selected Kenwood or Sony head unit.
  • The dashboard fitting kit, wiring and antenna connections.
  • The steering-control and vehicle-function interface.
  • Camera, parking-sensor and factory-amplifier integration as required.
  • Installation, configuration and checks of the agreed retained functions.

Send us your VW’s year, model, a photo of the existing radio and a description of the fault. Mention the factory backup camera, parking sensors and any premium sound system. We will quote the package that suits your car, with the integration details explained before you commit.

VW radio failure and replacement FAQs

Does a black screen mean my VW radio needs replacing?

Not necessarily. VW documents software-related blank screens on some systems. The unit’s power, connections and applicable software information need to be considered before treating the symptom as permanent hardware failure. If replacement is the right route, PCS can build an integrated upgrade package.

Will resetting my Volkswagen radio fix the problem?

A restart may restore operation temporarily, but it does not establish why the problem occurred. Follow the instructions for your specific system in the owner’s manual. If freezing or restarting returns, note the symptoms and have the system assessed.

Can I replace an RNS 510 or MIB factory radio with Kenwood or Sony?

Ask PCS for a replacement package matched to the installed system and your vehicle. The radio family alone is not enough to select the complete kit: the dashboard, factory amplifier, camera and vehicle controls all affect the installation.

Will I lose my steering controls, reversing camera or parking sensors?

Retaining these features is central to our VW replacement service. We specify the integration around your car and explain the supported controls, camera behaviour and parking functions in the quote. Any limitations or extra hardware are identified before installation.

Can an older VW get wireless CarPlay and Android Auto?

Yes, a suitable aftermarket head unit can add those features without the car having had them from the factory. PCS selects a wireless-capable Kenwood or Sony receiver and the installation hardware for your VW. You will also need a compatible phone.

Is this a Volkswagen recall?

The VW documents cited here are technical service information, not evidence of a recall covering every radio with these symptoms. Ask Volkswagen to check your VIN for any applicable campaigns or coverage.
