JL Audio ACP108LGW3V3 β€” 8β€³ powered subwoofer enclosure, 250 W class-D amplifier

Our Vancouver client had just taken delivery of a 2023 Mustang Mach-E and came to the shop with a simple request and one condition attached. He wanted the bottom end the factory system doesn't have. He did not want to pay for it in cargo space β€” and pointedly, not much of it, even though the Mach-E has plenty to give.

Small box, no compromises

That condition does most of the choosing. The subwoofer had to be compact, it had to be self-contained, and it had to sit somewhere that was already dead space rather than somewhere he would notice.

We went through the options on the shelf with him and he settled on the JL Audio ACP108LGW3V3 β€” an 8β€³ driver in a ported enclosure with a 250-watt class-D amplifier built into the end of the box. Everything is inside: no separate amplifier to find a home for, no amp rack, no long runs of speaker cable to route. In a vehicle where the priority is taking up as little room as possible, that integration is the point.

Down in the load bay, hard against the side trim, in the space between the seat backs and the tailgate. It stays out of the way of whatever the owner puts in the back.

What it changed

An 8β€³ subwoofer is not there to shake the mirrors, and this one isn't trying to. What it does is take the lowest couple of octaves away from door speakers that were never going to reproduce them, which is why adding a small, properly set-up subwoofer so often reads as "the whole system got clearer" rather than "the system got more bass". Kick drums land instead of thudding, bass lines have pitch, and the front of the car stops working so hard.

An EV is a particularly good place for this, too. There is no engine noise masking the bottom end, so what a subwoofer adds is audible at every speed rather than only when you turn it up.
